Next 1000days, early childhood care window of opportunity

Abstract

Given the significance of first 1000 days in the life of a child, academicians and policy makers have conceptualised action for nearly a decade. This is the critical period in the development of a child starting from conception to first two years and has lasting impact on baby’s growth and development. Fifty percent of adult height and eighty percent of brain growth is reached by two years.

However, there is a second window of opportunity, ‘Next 1000days’

which is  the period from 2 to 5 years. In order to augment the gains of first 1000 days and to focus attention to those who missed the first window, the concept of next 1000 days has emerged. In addition, it involves special attention to children with disabilities of vision, hearing, neurodevelopment that may manifest or get detected late. It also focusses on ECCE i.e. early childhood care and education.
