Dear Sir / Madam,
Greetings from IAPSM
We are grateful to you for your active support and participation in the various activities carried out by IAPSM. World AIDS Day, observed on 1st December every year is one of the most recognized international health days and offers a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness about AIDS and the global spread of the HIV virus.
As per global estimates for the year 2015, there are about 36.7 million people living with HIV, 2.1 million new HIV cases and 1.1 million AIDS related deaths. India has about 2.1 million people living with HIV infection and 68000 AIDS related deaths. The UN Sustainable Development Goals aim to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030.
However, the decline in new HIV infections among adults has stalled over the years. Worldwide an estimated 1.9 million adults have become infected with HIV every year for at least the past five years and the number of new HIV infections is rising in some region. Hence, there is an urgent need to reinvigorate HIV prevention efforts if the world is to stay on the Fast-Track to ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
IAPSM recognizes the need to undertake urgent and immediate efforts for HIV prevention.
In commemoration of World AIDS Day 2016, IAPSM is planning to observe a set of activities that include a CME on prevention of HIV/AIDS, Awareness Rally, nationwide competition on Slogan writing, Essay writing & Poster making for MBBS students, Interns & PG students with awards in each category through our State Chapters & Departments of Community Medicine in medical colleges across India. We have provided a tool kit that will be helpful in observing the event. The participating colleges are free to innovate and collaborate with other likeminded organizations/ NGO/CBO.
