Introduction:
Sleep disturbances are increasingly common due to academic stress, technology use, and lifestyle changes. Poor sleep hygiene adversely affects physical and mental health, leading to fatigue and impaired academic performance, especially among students.
Objective:
This study aimed to assess sleep hygiene, patterns, and influencing factors among university students in North India.
Materials and Methods:
A cross-sectional study was conducted among 250 students from 1st to 3rd year at Subharti Medical College, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Data were collected using a self-administered online questionnaire via Google Forms after obtaining informed consent. Ethical clearance was granted by the Institutional Ethics Committee. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS and MS Excel.
Results:
Of the 250 students, 44% were male and 56% female. Sleep-promoting factors included studying (72.4%), exercise (83.2%), and calming techniques (24%), while tea/coffee (62%), smoking (6.4%), and electronic devices (89.2%) were common sleep disruptors. Although most students believed more than 6 hours of sleep was necessary, only 56% achieved this on weekdays. Reported consequences of poor sleep included low energy (80.8%), stress (74.8%), lack of focus (74%), behavioral changes (71.2%), academic hindrance (70%), and sleep deprivation (62%).
Conclusion:
Understanding and improving sleep hygiene is crucial for student well-being and academic success.
